Contact Professor Jeongwon Joe for information. With three big premieres in 2019 ( Central Park Five, Blue, and Fire Shut Up in My Bones ), the #BlackLivesMatter energies from 2020 that still continue, the number of opera companies that have newly invested in their Diversity-Equity-Inclusion work, and the Metropolitan Opera opening their 2021 season with their first opera by a Black composer-Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones, we are poised in an exciting and historic way to learn new lessons about Black history, justice, and humanity from an unlikely place: opera. We are living in a particularly momentous time in history following especially complicated politics of race relations in the US after the presidencies of Barak Obama and Donald Trump. If we can see past slavery and its afterlives on stage, Black folks will more likely be given a true humanity in real life off stage. Despite the artifice (people do not sing to each other in “real life”) and considering the elitist all-white associations with the genre, the emotion, power, and energy of opera shows Black people to be fully human. Ĭonsidered a grand spectacle, opera hyper-stretches reality in ways that have proven, ironically, to be not just entertaining-but also relatable to multiple populations, including those it has traditionally excluded.
